Map ReadingMake sure one at least of any party can do this properly. Starting from basics the points of the compass are as shown above and the map references are taken from west to east first and then south to north second. If you dont understand them get someone who does to explain and then test you on it . (Add? more?) BRIDLEWAYS these are shown as green dashes _ _ _ _ _ on the maps and these are legal routes and not necessarily either 1. Ride able or 2. Marked on the ground. Many shown, on the map are unrideable, non-existent on the ground or just not the best way to go.Off the moor most will be OK and easily followed but on the moor many are meaningless. One of our helpers in the guide Martin Gibson recently told us a very simple and very helpful point: look very carefully behind the green dashes, If you can see thin black double or single dashes or dots then there is a track or path on the ground, If there is not then there is not and there may well be nothing on the ground unless it is going in a currently useful direction. |
